The role of the
Catechist is an ancient
one in the history of the Church. To be
a catechist is to share in the ministry of Christ our teacher. The word catechist comes from a Greek word
meaning “to echo.” Catechists “echo” the
Word of God to the children in
their classes, aiming to deepen their relationship with God and their
commitment to living out the Gospel in their daily lives.
The heart of catechesis is the heart of the
catechist, which should be the heart of Christ. To
be a catechist one needs to continually develop their relationship
with Jesus in order to share the fruit of that with their students.
Courses to develop your skill as a
catechist are offered at the parish at various times throughout the
year. These classes lead to certification
for the
Archdiocese of Newark.
Aides are volunteers who assist the
catechists in the classroom in grades K through 8. Aiding can be the
first step
to becoming a catechist.
If you are interested in becoming a
catechist or aide, please contact the Faith Formation Office. We welcome ALL parishioners to consider these
ministries.
